Postal History

Rare 1949 Israeli International Cover: Complete Rows with 50mil Doar Ivri Tabs.   On June 24, 1949, the Ministry of Transportation dispatched a high-rate international large cover from Tel Aviv Israel. The total rate of the cover is 1,400 mil, reflecting its weight (500 grams).  It bears an assortment of Doar Ivri 50mil stamps arranged in sheet rows, giving the impression of a complete sheet, totaling 28 stamps. The bottom two rows feature complete tabs, while the top row includes almost the full row of the right corner with the corner markings on the selvage (serial no. 1 in a triangle on top and rectangle). The stamps were canceled with a few cds from HAKIRYA in Tel Aviv on June 27, 1949.  Additional franking on this cover includes '51' and '3'.  The incomplete address is visible on this roughly shaped cover, reading "... 57th Street, New York 17, NY, USA."  It is understood that the intended recipient's address was for the "Government of Israel Supply Mission, 250 West 57th St. NY 19. (dimensions of the envelope are 24.5cm x 200cm). Given the substantial weight of the cover, requiring a high rate of 1,400 mil, it's likely that the large envelope was specifically intended for the Government of Israel Supply Mission in New York, suggesting its probable use by the recipient.
