1949 Unadopted Stamp Sheet: Rabbi Akiva Presentation with Arthur Szyk's Handwritten Dedication
1949 unadopted stamp sheet, originally submitted by Arthur Schick to the Post Office. This vertical sheet of 25 (5x5) featuring a striking depiction in blue-green on glossy paper mounted on cardboard, showcases Rabbi Akiva presenting a Torah scroll, adorned with the timeless quote "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). Rabbi Akiva emphasized this as a fundamental principle of the Torah. Below the illustration, the Magen David symbolizes the profound connection between Israel, the Torah, and Israel's communal care ethos.
Notably, the sheet includes an empty square at the bottom left intended for denomination. Adding a personal touch, Arthur Szyk's handwritten inscription at the bottom reads, "New Canaan, April 1949, to David Remez, with kindest Regards," accompanied by his signature. David Remez's signature is also present at the bottom left on the cardboard, marking his collection handstamp.
Dimensions: 175-245 mm. From the esteemed collection of D. Remez.
