Arthur Szyk's Color Lithograph Print of Israel: From the Visual History Series of the United Nations
In Arthur Szyk's lithograph, 'Israel,' a rich narrative unfolds, weaving together biblical and historical sagas spanning millennia. This vibrant frontispiece chronicles the saga of the 12 tribes, The Exodus, the Bar-Kokhba Revolt, Ezekiel's prophecies, and the genesis of the State of Israel.
The color lithograph is printed on off-white paper, featuring a central white panel adorned with a blue Star of David encircled by grapes, topped with a regal crown and menorah. Above, three figures—Hur, Moses, Aaron—stand in unity, while portraits of King Solomon and King David flank them. Below, the Ten Commandments are guarded by golden lions, with an Israeli soldier and a pioneer man on either side.
Ezekiel and Bar-Kokhba are depicted in blue medallions, while gold symbols representing the twelve tribes of Israel adorn the image. A floral motif borders the artwork, punctuated by yellow Stars of David.
Of particular note, the lithograph bears Arthur Szyk's signature in pink ink, along with a handwritten dedication in green ink: "New Canaan 1948 - To David Remez with my complements, Arthur Szyk." This personal touch adds a profound connection to the artwork's history.
On the back, details include publication information, crediting Arthur Szyk and K. Bileski, with lithography by Herman Jaffe. This is a remarkable portrayal of Jewish heritage and resilience, capturing the essence of Israel's rich history."
